Rare moth discovery at Kinneff Community Orchard

Volunteers monitoring wildlife at Kinneff Community Orchard have made an exciting discovery, recording one of Scotland’s rarest moth visitors. During a routine moth survey using overnight light traps, the team identified a Marbled Yellow Pearl (Evergestis extimalis), a species recorded only a handful of times in Scotland.

The find came as part of a community project involving six enthusiastic volunteers who have recorded more than 200 moths from 45 species over three survey nights. While many colourful species were spotted, including Garden Tiger, Swallowtail and Light Emerald moths, the appearance of the Marbled Yellow Pearl was the highlight.

The volunteer team, ranging in age from 10 years old upwards, described themselves as “really chuffed” by the discovery. They also thanked local Moth Recorder Mark Tasker for lending the moth trap, sharing expert advice and helping confirm this remarkable find.
